California: Badwater Basin (282 Feet BELOW SEA LEVEL)

Date of hike: March 2006

The salt flats at Badwater Basin

A long, long time ago (before kids) we went to a wedding in San Diego and made the puzzling decision to spend the rest of our week’s vacation in Death Valley. I’m sure it can be really miserable there, but we went in March and were surprised when:

Sun rise in Death Valley

1) It rained.
2) We were kind of cold.

The coolest part of course was visiting the lowest point in the United States – Badwater Basin at 282 feet below sea level. On clear days you can see Mt. Whitney from Badwater Basin, but it was too cloudy on the day we went.

Sand Dunes

If you’re climbing Whitney this year I highly suggest a side trip to Death Valley. We enjoyed Natural Bridge Canyon, the Salt Flat, and the sand dunes. Plus you can say you went from the highest of high points to the lowest of low points all in one trip.

gosh, so lovely, you make me want to go here at spring time I did not have a picture of Badwater with a lot of water in it and with snowcapped Telescope Peak, I guess, because we always come here at Thanksgiving, which does not have a lot of snow yet to be very obvious for photo. What a very beautiful reflection.
