I have been in the market for a comfortable base layer for my winter hikes, so I was excited to get the opportunity to try the Minus33 Franconia Midweight Bottoms. Before I even tried them on I was smitten with the clever packaging, and I loved the color. I chose red, and was thrilled to see the color wasn’t just any red. It was like the red of your favorite crayon in a box of 64. I couldn’t wait to hit the trail.
Trial One: First impressions
Merino midweight base layer from @Minus33 makes a great substitute for pants when working from home. Review from the woods coming soon!

The first time I put on my Franconia Midweight Bottoms from Minus33 I immediately began scheming of ways to wear them instead of pants. They are so soft and comfortable; I wanted to wear them everywhere. I have spent way more time than is decent wearing them around my house. They are now my go-to lounge wear for things like sitting by the fire, reading with the kids, and watching football. Before I hit the trail, I knew these pants scored high for comfort.
Trial Two: Family Hike
Eventually me and my new pants made it out of the house. I wore them as a base layer under convertible hiking pants on a family hike. It was one of those typical fall days where we froze during the cold, wet morning, and roasted when the sun came out in the afternoon. It was frustrating to dress for, but great for testing both the insulating and wicking functionalities of these midweight bottoms.
These pants were like a power boost for my skin. They gave me extra warmth when I needed it, but were breathable when the temperature rose. For the entire hike they were just as soft and comfortable as they were when I was kicking around at home.
Trial Three: Camping
The weather leading up to our camping trip was amazing. It was sunny with temperatures in the mid to high 70’s all week. When we woke up the morning of our trip, it still wasn’t too cold, but it had begun to rain a bit. I put my Franconias in my pack figuring I’d change into them after dinner that night. Halfway through my son’s mid day soccer game I was shivering, and wishing I had a base layer on. That’s the way fall goes, right? As soon as I got home, I grabbed the pants from my pack and put them on.
I ended up living in these pants for two wet and chilly days, and I can say with no hesitation that they are great for keeping your legs warm. At 5 am the temperatures were in the low 40’s and I could hear families leaving because they were too cold to sleep. I knew it must be cold, because I could see my breath. However, I was nice and toasty with my pants on, and went back to bed while they looked for tent poles in the dark. When I finally got up, I was warm, well rested, and ready to spend another day in the woods.
A Few of My Favorite Things:
✅ Amazing comfort. You won’t want to take them off.
✅ Breathability makes them suitable for changing weather conditions.
✅ Easy to care for – you can machine wash and dry them.
I’m hoping Santa brings me a second pair!
