I’ve been preparing for our summer hike of Mt. Washington by googleing terms like Mt. Washington + shoes or Mt. Washington + snacks. Somewhere along the way I ran across the Mt. Washington Observatory page, and decided I should probably start doing something more than web surfing. We walk twice a day most days, but you know how it is. If you do something every day for years you don’t feel yourself doing it any more. I didn’t know what to add to my fitness regimen – time is a huge issue for me (like the rest of America) and I also didn’t want to spend a ton of money getting fit for a sport that doesn’t require much more than my own two feet. I decided to be creative and use what I have.
My new exercise plan involves the normal walks plus twenty minutes a day spent running up and down my stairs like a lunatic. Here’s the best part. My cat is in on the act. He stands at the top of the stairs and bites my wrist or leg on each lap. I think this is the perfect training. In case we get attacked by any bears or squirrels on Mt. Washington I will have experience protecting myself against wildlife as well as additional aerobic fitness.
